Restoring “Tusk” — A Remarkable Elephant Restoration Project

We would like to introduce you to “Tusk,” a beautifully carved wooden elephant who recently found a new home with one of our clients. While full of character and charm, Tusk arrived in very rough condition, showing extensive wear throughout the piece. His feet had significant damage, the original finish was heavily flaking, and his tusks were badly deteriorated and missing entirely. In fact, when he first arrived at our shop, he was cleverly wearing “Build-A-Bear” shoes to help protect his damaged feet.

The restoration process began with completely stripping away the failing finish, followed by a lacquer wash to ensure the surface was properly cleaned and prepared. Every inch of the carving was then carefully sanded and refined before we custom-built a jig and steam box to recreate and restore his missing tusks.

Once the structural restoration was complete, multiple sealer coats were applied before carefully staining the eyes, tusks, and toe details to enhance the depth and personality of the piece. The project was then completed with professional topcoats designed to protect and preserve the finish for years to come. After allowing the finish to fully cure, Tusk was finally delivered back home to his delighted owner.

Projects like this are always especially rewarding — combining craftsmanship, creativity, restoration, and a little personality along the way.
