Professional Staircase Shading Technique
In this instructional video, we demonstrate one of the professional shading techniques we use to refine and deepen wood colour during the staircase restoration process. This particular staircase had previously suffered from extensive damage and poor workmanship, requiring significant restoration before reaching the shading stage shown in this video.
Prior to filming, the staircase was fully sanded back to raw wood, repairs were completed, and the stain process was carefully applied to establish the foundation colour. The next step — featured in this video — is the shading process, a specialized finishing technique used to gradually build depth, richness, and tonal consistency throughout the wood surface.
To achieve the desired appearance, the stain colour was carefully reduced using lacquer thinner and professionally sprayed over the prepared staircase until the perfect tone and depth were achieved for the clients’ vision. Once the shading process was completed, the finish was sealed, scuff sanded, and prepared for the final protective topcoats.
Be sure to watch the YouTube video below to see this professional finishing technique in action. We share many instructional videos covering wood restoration, colour matching, touch-up, and finishing methods from start to finish.
